Mavs Afternoon Drive: Carlisle's Film Review

Mike Fisher -- DB.com

   Rick Carlisle watched the film.

He gave it two thumbs down.

We’ll start there in this quickie edition of Mavs Afternoon Drive:

ITEM: “Looking at the film (of the Mavs’ 101-92 loss to Washington), we've got to play better at both ends of the floor," the Mavs coach said following practice on Wednesday. "We're not going to shoot well every game, and when we don't, we have to hang in the game. We're going to have to do it defensively. We were poor last night defensively when we needed to be good."

ITEM: Mavs owner Mark Cuban says ticket sales are fine.

"The most tickets we have left for any game is 3,600,'' Cuban said..

The Mavs want to keep alive their streak of 318 straight sellouts. Cuban is willing to do anything to accomplish that, from $2 tickets (he sold 648 via his Twitter account yesterday) to grabbing a megaphone and running around on the streets.

“The only thing I haven’t tried is getting a megaphone and going outside and screaming,’’ Cuban said.

Knowing Tony Cubes, I think he’s seriously contemplating the idea.

ITEM: It’s a bit disconcerting to hear players use words and phrases like “confused’’ and “lack of energy’’ to describe the team’s play in a season opener. They are trying to put that behind them now – and insist they have.

"It was a good practice today," Shawn Marion said. "Everybody was competing and we did more in here today than we did last night. As veterans, we have to get this going and make sure we sustain it. You're going to make mistakes out there, but as long as you sustain the energy and effort everything else will take care of itself."

ITEM: Preparation has begun for the weekend’s back-to-back roadies. The Mavs are at the Lakers on Friday (9:30 p.m., on TX21 and ESPN) and then stay in the same gym for a 9:30 start against the Clippers (TX21).

ITEM: For what it’s worth, Wiz coach Flip Saunders likes Dallas’ chances of contending.

“No one talks about them a lot in the West, but the addition of Shawn has really added to them,'' Saunders said. "You've got Jason and Dirk being able to settle into their roles. Then you get Josh back, they've got a chance to contend with all these teams in the West.’’

For what it’s worth, Saunders said that before last night’s game.
